The photograph of vehicles parked in front of Victoria Theatre and Memorial Hall at Empress Place. The foundation stone for the Town Hall was laid in 1855. Designed by Mr. John Bennett, a civil and mechanical engineer, it was completed in 1862, with a theatre on its ground floor and offices and meeting rooms on its second floor. Later, a memorial hall for Queen Victoria was built next to the Town Hall. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Frank Swettenham, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 9 August 1902. Designed by Swan and Maclaren, it was declared open by Sir John Anderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 18 October 1905. The Town Hall was renamed "Victoria Theatre". A clock tower joining the two buildings was built and completed in 1906. In 1979, Victoria Memorial Hall was renovated. It was renamed "Victoria Concert Hall" and declared open by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on 1 October 1980. It became home of Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO). Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall was gazetted as a national monument by Preservation of Monuments Board on 14 February 1992. In June 2010, it was closed for major renovations and will be reopen in 2013. Title devised by Library staff.
