This is a photograph of editor of Utusan Melayu, Mr. Said Zahari (right), delivering a lecture on "Political and ideological conciousness of Malays" at a training class of the Singapore Textiles and General Merchants Employees' Union (新加坡商店职工联合会). The union’s premises is located at Queen Street. He instigated the Utusan Melayu strike in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 21 July 1960. Mr. Said was a Singapore Malay citizen and joined Utusan Melayu in Singapore in 1950. He was sent to Kuala Lumpur as Chief Correspondent in 1955, and promoted to News Editor three years later. He succeeded Mr. Yusof Ishak as Editor in May 1959. He was also President of the Press Club of Malaya (1961) and the Malay Journalists Association (1957-1961). He was detained for 16 years (Feb 1963-Nov 1978) under the Internal Security Act for his involvement in Communist United Front activities. Title devised by Library staff.
