This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Tun Sir Tan Cheng Lock. He was a member of the Municipal Commission of Malacca (1912-1922); unofficial member of the Legislative Council (1923) and the Executive Council (1933-1935) of the Straits Settlements; and the first president of Malayan Chinese Association (1949-1958). He was appointed Justice of Peace for Malacca (Aug 1912); and awarded the title "Commander of the British Empire" (1933) and "Knight Commander of the British Empire" (1952) by King George VI. In 1958, he received the title 'Tun' by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong. His only son, Mr. Tan Siew Sin, was Malaysian Minister of Finance from 1959 to 1974.
