This picture depicts Singapore Fire Brigade's horse-drawn fire engines. The brigade was officially established in 1888. By 1909, there were three fire stations: the Central Fire Station at Hill Street, and a fire station each at Cross Street and in Kallang. It was renamed "Singapore Fire Service" in 1980 and again renamed "Singapore Civil Defence Force" in April 1989 after the merger of the Fire Service and the Civil Defence Force. Title devised by Library staff.
