This is a head-and-shoulder portrait of Mr. Henry Nicholas Ridley, also known as “Mad Ridley”, the first Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens from 1888 to 1912. He arrived in Singapore in 1888 to take charge of the Botanic Gardens. He was regarded as the Father of the Rubber Industry and he devised a process to extract rubber without damaging the tree.
