This is a view of the six-tier gopuram (entrance tower) of the Sri Mariamman Temple located at South Bridge Road. In the foreground are overhead cables for trolley buses which operated from 1920s to 1962. Established in 1827, Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. The tower, built in 1925, is richly embellished with sculptures of Hindu deities and sepoys, and ornamental carvings. The temple was gazetted as a national monument by the Preservation of Monuments Board on 28 June 1973. Title devised by Library staff.
