Information About

This is a photograph of a side view of the eight-storey Asian Seamen's Club at 20, South Quay. The foundation stone was laid by Sir Robert Black, Governor of Singapore, on 28 May 1956. Built to provide accommodation for foreign seamen, it was declared open by Mr. J.M. Jumabhoy, Minister for Commerce and Industry, in February 1958. In March 1970, the club was renamed "Singapore Mariners' Club". Later, the first and part of the second floors of the building was converted into office space for the Secretariat, and an annexe building was constructed to house the Employment and Welfare Divisions of National Maritime Board (NMB). After NMB moved into the building in October 1974, it became "NMB Building". After the site and the building was acquired by the Port Authority of Singapore for expansion of Tanjong Pagar Container Terminal, NMB was relocated to Maritime Building at 120, Cantonment Road in 1984. Title devised by Library staff.
