Façade of the former Thong Chai Medical Institution (同济医院) with its distinctive Chinese style roof design at 50, Eu Tong Sen Street. The institution began as Thong Chai Yee Say at 31, Upper Pickering Street in 1867, the first free clinic for Chinese immigrants in Singapore. It was relocated to 3, Wayang Street (now 50, Eu Tong Sen Street) in 1892 and renamed "Thong Chai Medical Institution. The building was gazetted as a national monument by the Preservation of Monuments Board on 6 July 1973. In 1976, the institution moved to the 10-storey Thong Chai Building at 52, Chin Swee Road. The building is now used for commercial purposes. TItle devised by Library staff.
