He was a former student at Serangoon English School and Raffles Institution; Honorary Member of the Singapore Recreation Club; President of the Singapore Hockey Association (1965-1970) and the South-East Asia Peninsular Games Federation Council (Sep 1973); the first President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (Nov 1970-1990); Honorary President of the Singapore Turf Club (1994-2001); Chairman of the Bukit Turf Club (1989-1994) and the Singapore Stock Exchange (1989-1993); Speaker of the Legislative Assembly (1963-1964); PAP Member of Parliament for Tanglin (1963-1988); and Minister for National Development (1965-1975), Home Affairs (1972), the Environment (1975-1979), Science and Technology (1977-1981), and Labour (1983).
