This picture depicts the façade of Raffles Institution (RI) in Bishan. Singapore Institution, the oldest school in Singapore, was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. He laid the foundation stone on 5 June 1823. The school was completed in 1837. Raffles Girls' School began in RI on 1 March 1844, and was separated in 1879. In 1903, Singapore Institution was renamed "Raffles Institution" when it was taken over by colonial government. RI was relocated twice, first to 51, Grange Road in 1972 and later to Bishan in June 1990. The old premises bounded by North Bridge Road, Bras Basah Road, Beach Road and Stamford Road, was demolished to make way for Raffles City Shopping Centre; completed in 1986.
