This photograph was taken at the funeral of businessman Tay Koh Yat. It shows the hearse followed by the motorcade moving along the side of a main road with some police officers escorting the procession on foot. A partial view of Elgin Bridge over the Singapore River can be seen in the background. - Description by Library staff. Tay Koh Yat (1880-1957) was an entrepreneur, Chinese community leader and well-known bus operator in Singapore. He started Tay Koh Yat Bus Company in 1938 which later became the largest Chinese bus company. This photograph is part of a collection of 179 black and white photographs of his Chinese funeral, capturing images of family and relatives in mourning clothes as well as friends and associates of the deceased at the wake. The collection also includes photographs of his grand funeral procession showing a wreath-bedecked hearse followed by cars, buses and lorries, with hundreds of people turned up to accompany him on his final journey.
