This is a portrait of young Mr. Edmund William Barker or Eddie Barker in his graduation robe. A student at Serangoon English School and Raffles Institution, he later became Minister for Law (1964-1988), National Development (1965-1975), Home Affairs (1972), the Environment (1975-1979), Science and Technology (1977-1981), and Labour (1983); the first President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (1970-1990); President of the Singapore Hockey Association (1965-1970); Chairman of Bukit Turf Club (1989-1994) and Singapore Stock Exchange (1989-1993); Honorary President of Singapore Turf Club (1994-2001); Speaker of the Legislative Assembly (1963-1964); and People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Tanglin (1963-1988).
