Information About

This picture depicts the timber-made Changi Lich Gate (foreground) of St. George's Church (background). It has two benches and was originally built by the prisoners of war of the British 18th Division interred in Changi Prison on December 1942, facing the entrance to the camp cemetery, where 581 British and Dutch soldiers and civilians died during the Second World War were buried. It was relocated to the south side of the church in 1952 and later removed to the northwest entrance in June 1960. After the British withdrawal from Singapore, it was finally sited at the Queen's Division Depot, Bassingbourne Barracks in Hertfordshire in 1972. In 1984, a replica of the gate was presented to the church. Title devised by Library staff.
