This is a half-length portrait of Wee Beng Chong, who studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) from 1955 to 1958 and furthered his studies at the L’ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France from 1964 to 1969. He was the first recipient of the Cultural Medallion in 1979. He served as head of the Fine Art Department in NAFA from 1982 to 1989. In 1964, he co-founded the Modern Art Society in Singapore.
