This is a view of the 16-storey Cathay Building at the foot of Mount Sophia in Dhoby Ghaut area from the lawn of the tennis pavilion of Young Men's Christian Association. Constructed between 1939 and 1941, it housed the Cathay Hotel, Cathay Restaurant and Cathay Cinema, the first air-conditioned cinema in Singapore opened on 3 October 1939. In 1970, the hotel was closed and converted into office space in 1974. A 12-storey Cathay Apartments was added in 1971 and in 1990, the Picturehouse cinema was opened. The building was reconstructed in 2000 with the art deco façade being retained, and was reopened in 2006 as "The Cathay", a shopping mall, residential and multi-screens cinema complex.
