View of the east elevation of the front block of National Museum of Singapore at 93, Stamford Road. Designed in neo-classical style, Raffles Library and Museum was constructed between 1886 and 1887. It was declared open by Sir Frederick Aloysius Weld (b.1823-d.1891), Governor of Straits Settlements, on 12 October 1887. The library was separated from the museum in 1960. In 1965, it was renamed "National Museum of Singapore". It was briefly known as "Singapore History Museum" between 1993 and 2006, before reverting to its previous name. After major restoration, it was declared open by President S.R. Nathan and Mr. Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, on 7 December 2006. The museum was gazetted as a national monument by Preservation of Monuments Board on 14 February 1992. TItle devised by Library staff.
