Missionary journals and letters, written during eleven years' residence and travels amongst the Chinese, Siamese, Javanese, Khassias, and other eastern nations

Information About

Right at the start, the author makes an impassioned plea for missionaries to go to China. He then describes the countries he visited and their inhabitants, recording his observations and missionary work in each. He twice visited Siam and Batavia reaching Bali as well. The beautiful scenery and interesting inhabitants in Java impressed him. He also went to the Tenger mountains and was awed by Mount Bromo. Two missionary excursions were made to the tin mines in the interior of the Malay Peninsula where he noted that the Malays living in villages were quite different from those who were marauders and pirates. His last year in the east was spent on the Khassias hills in Assam, India.
