This book presents the history of Singapore from 1941 to 1984 in pictures and a short accompanying narrative. The narrative preceding the pictures in each chapter describes the main events and explains why things happened the way they did. Where photographs to illustrate an event are not available, newspaper clippings have been used. The introduction covers the developments from 1819 onwards, the last two chapters deal with the problems that confronted an independent Singapore after 1965 and how these were overcome. Certain fundamentals had not changed over the years and the last chapter seeks to draw attention to what they imply for the years ahead.
