The aims of this publication are to present the National Museum collection of ship cloths and related materials and to focus attention on the complexity, detail and aesthetic appeal of the objects produced by the southern Lampung culture. Insights into the southern Lampung culture are intended to further explain the pieces in the Museum collection. Ship cloths are unique to the coastal inhabitants of southern Lampung of Sumatra, expressing vividly their perception of life and the world. The perception centred around the notion of the ship as a metaphor for society. It is a structured symbolic system which people could follow during transitional rites-of-passage.
