Since early 1971 when the Singapore Government began actively promoting metrication, the metric system has been successfully adopted in many fields of activities. Metrication of government departments and statutory boards is essentially completed with the exception of the technical departments, where conversion is going hand in hand with the private sector. The industrial sector is being involved ever increasingly, and so is the general public. Motorists are watching their speeds in km/h, and ladies are buying their dress materials in metres. Although there are many areas where greater efforts are required, Singapore is well on the way to joining nine-tenths of the world in using the metric system.
