Information About

The map of the island of Borneo first appeared in the 1657 Latin edition of Johannes Janssonius's Atlas Maritimus. In the 1680s the plates for the island of Borneo, Sumatra, the Banda Islands and Java were put up for aunction by Jansson's son-in-law and bought by Pieter Schenck and Gerard Valk. The present map is from Schenck and Valk's edition of Atlas Novus or Atlas Contractus published between 1680 and 1709. Embellished with title and scale cartouches, the former flanked by mer-people, the latter surrounded by putti holding measuring instruments. -- Dealer's description.
