This publication contains an account of the travels of Eliza Scidmore to the island of Java. She starts the narrative with a brief description of life in Singapore in the late nineteenth century. From Singapore, the author takes a steamer for her journey to Java. She describes her first sight of Java, the geography of the island, the various towns and places of interest she visits, and the local and foreign inhabitants of the island.
