Dazai's stories have appeared to be closely related to his personal life, the element of fiction in his stories has been more pronounced than other writers in the same genre. As such, a study of his life and background is necessary because events in his life gave him the substance for fiction, and it may therefore be more pertinent to appreciate his ability to fictionalise reality than to determine how much reality he conveyed in his writing. This text examines Dazai's colourful life by looking into the various social factors which could have influenced his development as a man and as an artist. Dazai's art and its relation to his life is also examined.
