“This publication offers a selection of reworked passages excerpted from the Journal, Memorials and Letters of Cornelis Matelief de Jonge (2015) to which some new supporting documents have been added. This book is aimed at students, teachers and researchers of Southeast Asia interested in the history of Singapore, Johor and the Straits region before 1800. The introduction has been adapted from a public paper held on the occasion of the original book’s soft-launch at the Siam Society in Bangkok, Thailand, on 7 August, 2014, as well as a public paper presented at the Toyo Bunko (Oriental Library) in Tokyo, Japan, on 20 September, 2014”—Preface.
