Information About

The story of Jane Eyre is set in England in the early 1800s. It is both a mystery story and a love story. It tells of the lives of the rich, who lived in huge mansions and employed many servants. Jane is a governess, or tutor, in one of these mansions. She is poor and plain among the rich and beautiful. Jane Eyre is based on Charlotte's own experiences in the north of England and as a governess. The characters in the book are very different from those in novels written by other women of her time. This is one of the reasons that Jane Eyre was such a success.
