Issued in John Ogilby's 1670 Atlas Jappanensis, a pirated English translation of Arnold Montanus's early account of the seventeenth century Dutch embassies to Japan (Gedenkwaerdige gesantschappen der Oost-Indische maatschappy in 't Vereenigde Nederland, aan de kaisaren van Japan) first published in Amsterdam in 1669. This map of Batavia showing prospect of the port, the tower of the great castle, which became the administrative center of the East India Company (VOC), is shown to the left of the parallel harbour walls. An alpha-numeric key in Dutch, provides a guide to the buildings and defences of the port. -- Dealer's description.
