In 1816, Basil Hall, a British naval officer, commanded the brig HMS Lyra as part of a diplomatic mission to China under William Pitt Amherst, Baron Amherst. This is a narrative of the survey voyage Hall undertook, travelling to the west coast of Corea (Korea) and Loo-Choo Island (Ryukyu Islands, Japan), with an appendix containing charts, nautical and hydrographical details. Includes a Loo-Choo (Ryukyuan) language vocabulary compiled by Herbert John Clifford, Esq., presenting a collection of words and sentences in common use.
