Fandi describes the atmosphere at the stadium as electrifying. As with every other Malaysia Cup match, he remembers seeing 50,000 to 60,000 fans showing their support to the lions & was amazed by the spectacular sight of fans who came from all walks of life that would continue to support the team at every match.
One of the things that Fandi misses about Malaysia Cup was the atmosphere at the stadium, the continuous support of the fans during the ups & downs of every match & the excitement of looking forward to the games during the weekends.
He feels that the Malaysia Cup heydays were every bit different from what the S-leagues had to offer.Having been in Geylang United before, he recalls that the fans of the same country were diversified based on their allegience to the clubs rather than a nation as the S-league teams were still based in Singapore. That is also the factor that makes Malaysia Cup unique, with its identity of uniting Singaporeans & bringing about solidarity in unity.
His memorable moments of winning the Malaysia Cup was because their hardwork had finally paid off & being able to pay a tribute to the fans for the continuous support. Then, he was also wearing the no. 17 jersey that was constantly associated to his name. In fac,t when he later found out that Singapore was pulled out from Malaysia Cup, he was very sad especially for the younger lions having missed the opportunity to develop their talents professionally at the national level.
He now has mixed feelings of Singapore joining back the Malaysia Cup as he feels that the new generation has different sentiment towards Malaysia Cup having been away from it for 17 years & realised that it is more of the older generation that are more supportive of it. Also the fact that our current Jalan Besar stadium can only accomodate 6,000-7,000 people & is not big enough to accomodate more football fans. Nevertheless, he is happy that Singapore is finally back in Malaysia Cup.
