For the celebration of the birthday of the Earth God at Mun San Fook Tuck Chee temple in Sims Drive, 2 straw dragons are constructed.
The skeleton of the dragon is made with cane bent into shape, and straw is then woven it as part of the construct.
On the procession day, joss sticks are placed onto the dragon (hence the name fire dragon) and care is made to ensure it doesn't burn prematurely.
At the end of the procession, one of the straw dragon is burned. (see photo)
The skill of making a straw dragon is said to be at the hand of one master and there is now a need for the younger ones to learn the skill before this craft disappears.
While capturing this photo, i see a huge crowd participating and enjoying the events.
With interest, there is hope for revival
