Faith unforgotten (Part 4) : people of the mosque, Haji Said San Alwi, my grandfather

Recollection
As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. My grandfather is very important in my life, and I’m really happy to be able to share something so important to him. As one of the two still living Mosque guardians, my grandfather is very fond of the mosque. His fondest memory is everything, from building it, to being the Imam, to insisting on going there for fasting month prayers (teraweh). He feels very responsible of the mosque. He enjoys the atmosphere of a kampung mosque. It brings together the worshippers and the bond that is formed is one that is unique to a kampung mosque. The mosque is also very family-friendly and tolerant of children, attracting many worshippers because of this. The ‘gotong-royong’ atmosphere of it also brings people of different generations together and is felt by everybody. Overall, he prefers going to Masjid Omar Salmah because of its familiarity and the calm and welcoming atmosphere that it offers. As my uncle says, “The mosque may be small but its heart is big.” ~Azaleah~ Acknowledgments We would like to thank the following people, who all helped us in one way or another. We would like to thank Azaleah’s family, specifically her Grandfather, Haji Said San Alwi and her Uncles, the Mosque Chairman, Encik Aziz, the Mosque Patron, Encik Syukur, Azaleah’s parents, Hana’s parents and the Singapore Memory Project, for giving us this opportunity. http://faithunforgotten.blogspot.sg/
