"How did the old Victoria School look like?" "Was it as well-known as it is today?" "How has Victoria changed, from the olden days to this day?" These questions were in my group's minds the moment we were given the task to find out more on Victoria School's History and Heritage. We were assigned to 'Kapor', which is near Syed Alwi Road, and we formulated a plan and set out to fulfill our tasks.
On 16 March of 2013, me and my fellow group members ambled down the sidewalk of Syed Alwi Road. We were exhausted and dehydrated from hours of walking under the scorching heat with heavy backpacks and asking countless number of people in shophouses, hawker centers and even restaurants, but to no avail. Unfortunately, no one could answer our questions. Everyone were either not willing to stop and answer as they are busy with their business or they had no clue.
Still determined to fulfill our tasks, we set out once again on 21st of March, Thursday. After long and tiring hours under the heat once more, we FINALLY found an Old Victorian.
He, who did not wish to appear on the photos and did not volunteer his name, said, "As an Old Victorian in the past, I remember that I was the vice Chairman of Red Cross and that every Saturday we would always assemble with other Uniformed Groups such as Scouts at the Grand Stand." He then elaborated further on his CCA.
"I remember as a tradition in the past, Victorians always made banners with paint to support and spur the sportsmen on in inter-school competitions." He also joked about an accident he recalled where his class stained the floor with paint. When asked about how Victoria has changed, he replied that Victoria has developed, and changed in a positive way throughout all the years of rich history and heritage.
After the interview, we learnt new things about Victoria School, and how little we actually know. The Victorian Spirit has been instilled in Victorians for as long as one can remember, and we should cherish it, and be honored to be a Victorian.
