On 16th March, my group of friends and I went to Kampong Glam, an old VS site to do our History project. From those four interviewee we interviewed, we found out that a few years ago, VS wanted to change the school into a mixed school, however, the alumni strongly disagreed the idea, thus it was dropped down. We also found out that Victoria School started an English class formed in Kampong Glam with twelve Malay pupils. It was named Kampong Glam Malay School before being renamed to Victoria School many years later. The school enrolment grew but the school provided poor shelter from the weather and was often flooded. At the same time, we also found out that events hosted by Victoria School was the sports day meet. A few school came together and held the event smoothly. One last interesting fact we gathered from the four interviewee is that our ex-president Nathan, and many other politicians also studied at VS!
Personal Reflection - As a Victorian, it is important to know about our past, our history. Through this project, it made me know more about our past like how Victoria School grew to such a successful Secondary School. How it came to be the top government boys school. What have contributed to our 137 years of history? As my group mates and I were walking around Kampong Glam, we encountered some difficulties. Victoria School first established at Kampong Glam, it was in the 19th century and not much people know about the history of our school. Undefeated by the challenging obstacle, my team mates and I persevered to the end and and continued to look for people to interview. Our hard work had paid off when we finally found some people who know about part of our past. Residents of Kampong Glam kept singing praises of our school, like how well behaved our seniors were in the past, and that VS is a good and reputable Secondary School. Through this experience, and after knowing about out history, it has urged me to work hard to maintain Victoria School's reputation or even be better than before. We all have to work hard to keep Victoria's flag unfurled and keep our history going forever.
