Noorul Islam, an Islamic fortnightly, first appeared in September 1936. The editor and publisher was Maulvi A Mohamed Ibrahim.
The magazine, with the tagline ‘The only Muslim Bi-Monthly Tamil News in Malaya,’ was published from 206 Middle Road and printed at St. Mary’s Press located at 186 Albert Street. The 12-page magazine, measuring 7.75” x 10.75”, was sold for 5 cents per copy. It featured editorials, essays, serialised stories, and proverbs among other content.
The editorials and essays focused on matters of Islamic faith and even reforms within the faith. Essay titles included ‘Which is the real reform?’ and ‘Unity.’ One issue discussed details of the conversion of Gandhi’s elder son, Harilal, to Islam, taking the name Abdullah Gandhi.
The actual date of Noorul Islam’s closure and the reasons behind it remain unknown.
It's worth noting that another publication bearing the same title is regarded as the first Tamil daily in Singapore, which commenced in 1904. It was edited by D M S Maricar, also known as Sinnavappu Maricar, with S Pakeer Mohamed as the proprietor. No copies of this daily are available today.
