1. How do I volunteer with National Library Board and National Archives of Singapore?

For members of the public who require further assistance with submitting your volunteer registration form online, you can contact us at volunteer@nlb.gov.sg or approach our staff at the public libraries for assistance.

2. When will I know if my application to be a volunteer is successful?

Once an online application is submitted, we will take between 5 to 7 working days to process your application. If your application is successful, you will receive an email with your log-in identification and password.


If you do not hear from us after 7 working days of submitting your application, please contact us at volunteer@nlb.gov.sg

3. When can I start volunteering?

Once your application is successful, you can log into our Friends of the Library and Archives portal and sign up for the volunteering opportunities that you are interested in.

Signups for volunteering opportunities are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. If there are more volunteers than available volunteering positions, National Library Board and National Archives of Singapore reserves the right to reject applications that were submitted at a later time.

4. What kind of volunteering opportunities can I choose from?

There are various volunteering opportunities available at the libraries and archives that you can choose from.

These include volunteers for Library Operations and Support, Event Management and Support, Storytelling, Digital Programmes, Programme Curation, KidsREAD Reading Clubs, Exhibition Guide, Reference and Research, Transcription and Translation, Others.

5. Are the volunteering opportunities available at all times?

Different volunteering opportunities are available at different times of the year. You can check our Friends of the Library and Archives portal to view the volunteering opportunities currently available for signing up.

6. Do I have to commit a minimum number of hours?

There is no minimum number of hours you have to commit. Our volunteering opportunities include both one time and regular volunteering opportunities that you can choose to sign up for based on your schedule.

7. Will I be trained before I volunteer?

You will be briefed by staff each time before you begin your volunteering tasks.

If the volunteering tasks requires additional training beforehand, you will be notified to attend training sessions before you begin volunteering with us.

8. What is the code of conduct for volunteers?

As our volunteers, you are our ambassadors of excellent library users. Work closely with our staff and be helpful and courteous when interacting with patrons. Always Greet, Smile and say Thank You!

Should you encounter any customer related issues or require assistance while volunteering, please contact our staff immediately.

9. What is the dress code for volunteers?

You are required to dress presentably in neat and clean attire at all times.

We recommend volunteers to wear plain shirts or blouses, long pants, covered shoes or your school uniform. Do bring along a jacket due to the lower temperatures in our libraries and archives.

Please do not wear sleeveless t-shirts, blouses, shorts, miniskirts, sandals, slippers, open toed and high heel shoes.

10. What are the benefits of volunteering with National Library Board and National Archives of Singapore?

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding activities that you can participate in.

Friends of the Library and Archives are rewarded according to the number of volunteering hours and level of service they provide. There are 5 levels of awards: Thank You, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum. Friends of the Libraries and Archives will be invited to selected special events for volunteers.

Platinum Award Recipients who complete more than 100 volunteering hours within a fiscal year (e.g. April 2018 to March 2019) will also enjoy an increase in library loan quota with our Friends of the Library and Archives Library membership.

11. I will be away from Singapore for a period of time. Will I need to register myself again when I return?

You will not lose your volunteer status with us if you are leaving Singapore for a long time. Do notify us however if you still wish to receive any correspondence from us during your absence.
