A Librarian's World
Cover to Content: Magazines from the National Library’s Legal Deposit Collection

Ever wondered what librarians do? In this series of monthly talks, find out what makes our librarians tick as they share highlights of their work from the collections of the National Library.

Spend a nostalgic hour with us as Senior Librarian Barbara Quek shares about local magazines from yesteryear and shows us how the magazine format in Singapore has evolved over time. Don’t miss this opportunity to see first-hand the maiden issues of titles such as Automobile Sports, Cathay Cinenews, Her World, New Directions, The Food Paper, The Journal of the Singapore Society of Architects, The Scholiast and Trackline!
Magazines and periodicals not only inform us about developments in areas such as leisure and trends, but may also be materials for serious reference and research. Do you remember the magazines you used to read in the ’80s? Or are you curious to discover the types of magazines your parents or grandparents read?

About the Speaker
Barbara Quek is from the National Library’s Advocacy & Statutory Functions team in the Content & Services Division. Her team oversees the compliance of Legal Deposit in Singapore – a statutory function of the National Library that enables the library to collect and preserve all works by Singapore writers, producers and publishers as part of Singapore’s heritage. For more information about Legal Deposit, please visit

Barbara also selects materials from donor collections as well as gift and exchange titles for the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library.

She co-wrote the article, ‘The Value of Print Literacy in the Education of Young Children in Singapore’ (2003), which was published in The International Journal of the Book, and authored a story on her alma mater, Methodist Girls’ School, titled ‘MGS memories at 11 Mount Sophia’, for the National Library’s BiblioAsia.
