“My Fair Lady” Musical and ticket giveaway promotion

MFL Lock-ups FA Jan 2014 v1-2

My Fair Lady is a musical play based on Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, which was adapted by Alan Jay Lerner, with music by Frederick Loewe. The first performance of the musical was staged on 15 March 1956 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York. It was later presented for the first time  in England on 30 April 1938 and later made into a film starring the elegant Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, a role she had allegedly “stole” from Julie Andrews, the original Eliza Doolittle, though it was a decision by Warner Bros.

Set in London in 1912, The story tells of Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl’s transformation into a “proper lady” when Professor Higgins discovers her in Covent Garden, with a wager that he can pass her off as a Duchess in a matter of weeks. A tale of a clash of language, culture and an unlikely romance emerges. Interestingly, the original ending by Shaw was omitted by Lerner, which spoke of a different pairing. The musical won six Tony Awards and in 1961, became the longest-running production in Broadway history at that time. Some of the hits from the musical include “The Rain in Spain”, “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Get Me To The Church On Time”, among others.
