Lee Kong Chian Reference Library
In 1953, Dr Lee Kong Chian, the founder of the Lee Foundation, marked a milestone in the provision of free public library services in Singapore when he donated $375,000 through the Lee Foundation to the Singapore Government to build the National Library at Stamford Road.
Fifty years later, in 2003 his descendants made another generous donation of $60 million through the Lee Foundation, which helped to defray the construction costs of the National Library Building. This building houses the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, Central Public Library, exhibition spaces, event halls and offices.
The contribution also enabled NLB to develop the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library into a world-class repository of information on Singapore and Southeast Asia. The library continues to serve the ever-growing information, research and learning needs of Singaporeans and individuals from all over the world. This is the single largest donation received by the NLB to date.
