Nodes

Nodes serve as new curated entry points into the National Library Board's (NLB) wide array of services and collections. They are an extension of learning experiences beyond our physical libraries and aim to bring content and services to wherever people frequent as they go about their daily lives. Nodes are a Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025 (LAB25) initiative.

Current Nodes

1. Browse and Borrow at Hougang Mall!

BNB Hougang Mall

NLB is launching its next Browse-n-Borrow kiosk on 18 November 2025 at Level 1, Hougang Mall while Cheng San Library undergoes a refresh.

The self-service kiosk features up to 550 books for all age groups that are refreshed regularly. Library patrons can physically browse and borrow books (subject to their loan quota) or collect their reservations using their library card or NLB Mobile app – all from one convenient location. Whether shopping or dining, patrons can discover their next great read just steps away!

2. The Presidential Pop-up Library is back with new features!

Presidential Library

Following its successful run, the Presidential Pop-up Library has relocated to Plaza Singapura Level 3, with an enhanced experience that brings together curated reads and inspiring stories from Singapore’s leaders and community. Inspired by the grandeur and design of Istana's façade and gardens, this pop-up library features an expanded browsing collection for reading at the library and eBooks available for visitors to borrow.

What is new? Browse recommended reads from 30 iconic Singaporean personalities, with physical copies displayed throughout the library alongside personal insights into their book selections.

The collection continues to feature books written by Presidents, biographies, and book recommendations from President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, former President Halimah Yacob and former President Dr Tony Tan. These titles span themes from leadership and public service to personal development, offering insights into the values that shaped their Presidencies. The pop-up library also showcases all nine Presidents through historical narratives and oral history recordings from the National Archives of Singapore.

Discover the literary influences of Singapore's Presidents through an interactive display and put your knowledge of Singapore’s Presidents to the test at our exciting, timed quiz! 3. NLB Originals eComics – Mobile Nodes

Stories are about to hit the road! NLB Originals eComics transform Singapore's buses into mobile Nodes where the library travels with you. Follow serialised eComics that deliver fresh episodes with every journey.

These original eComics are the creations of local artists Johnny Lau, Lim Jun Yong, Luqmaan Haziq and Nick Tan, showcasing Singapore's artistic talent alongside NLB's eResources. Each comic series features 5 episodes releasing every two weeks - don't miss out!

5. Star Wars Pop-Up Library

Inspired by the legendary Jedi Archives, Singapore’s first-ever Star Wars Pop-Up Library houses a collection of Star Wars physical and digital books, catering to readers of all ages, from young Padawans to Jedi Masters. Check out the list of eReads here.

Experience the newly piloted automated book retrieval and return system, featuring a robotic arm that retrieves and returns books through a touch-screen kiosk.

Engage with Star Wars-themed interactive activities including a personality quiz to discover which Jedi you are most like, and a trivia challenge that puts your Star Wars knowledge to the test.

7. Comics & Games Library

Comic and Games Library

The Comics & Games Library is a pop-up library located at Punggol Coast Mall in partnership with JTC and local board games company Origame. The pop-up library is a fully self-service library that will feature a collection of more than 7,000 comics, game-themed reads, graphic novels, and board games.

The collection features an English-language collection of popular comics and graphic novels, and game-inspired fiction and non-fiction titles, and a separate children’s collection to provide young readers with opportunities to explore the comics and graphic novel genres. A Singapore showcase wall celebrates local comics, donated by local comic collectors from their personal collection.

Fun and games await at the pop-up library’s dedicated board games area – choose from an exciting selection of local and regional board games, with tables and seats available for everyone to play, relax and enjoy.

To enter the library, visitors may scan their library-compliant ID card, NLB eCard or request for a QR code day pass with a Singapore-registered mobile number or email via this link. Visitors may browse and borrow the collection via the NLB Mobile app.

8. Fantasy & Sci-Fi Library

The Fantasy & Sci-Fi Library is a themed pop-up library supported by the Tampines Changkat Community Club. Located at #03-01 of the Tampines Changkat Community Club, this pop-up library is National Library Board’s (NLB) first dedicated library for the fantasy and science fiction genre, offering a gateway to imaginative worlds and futuristic visions for all to explore. Boasting a curated collection of over 5,000 books in both English and Mother Tongue Languages, the library caters to adults and children alike. To supplement the collection, there is also a curated selection of fantasy and sci-fi eBooks available for loan.

To access the library, visitors may scan their library-compliant ID card or NLB eCard. Visitors who do not have a library-compliant ID card may go to https://go.gov.sg/gngsci-emailmobilelogin to generate a QR code day pass to enter. They will need to provide their Singapore registered mobile number or email. The collection can be borrowed using the NLB Mobile app.

9. Central Arts Library at UAS

CAL at UAS

The Central Arts Library at UAS is a pop-up library located at the National Design Centre, in partnership with the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS). This pop-up library offers a curated design and applied arts-focused collection consisting of four clusters: People, Product, Space and Visual.

To enter the library, visitors may scan their library-compliant ID card, NLB eCard or request for a QR code day pass with a Singapore-registered mobile number or email via this link. Visitors may browse and borrow the collection via the NLB Mobile app. There is also an eReads featuring a curated list of design e-titles to complement the collection. All are welcome!

10. Comics Library at West Coast Community Centre (CC)

Comics Library at West Coast CC

The Comics Library is an interim pop-up library located at West Coast Community Centre. Visitors can visit this library to browse and borrow a curated collection of comics via the NLB Mobile app. The Comics Library offers a diverse collection of comics, graphic novels, and manga in the three mother tongue languages and English, and a dedicated children's collection. 

Visitors can also discover StoryGen, where patrons can put their own spin on classic stories using generative AI. StoryGen allows patrons to create personalised stories by customising narratives with a diverse range of inputs such as location, main characters and ending.
 
Please note that patrons will need to register their Passion Card (CAN)/EZ-Link via this link to enter the space. Registration will be approved by West Coast Community Centre staff within 3 working days and pre-registration is highly encouraged. Registration is free of charge. Can't wait 3 working days? 11. Node at Singapore Maritime Gallery

Node @ Singapore Maritime Gallery offers informational write-ups on the past, present and future of the Singapore Maritime. Visitors can also discover curated eReads and videos for further exploration.

12. Science Centre Going Viral

Going Viral is an interactive exhibition that raises awareness around pandemic management, showcasing the significance of STEM in countering health crises and the evolution of science in pandemic intervention. The exhibition is free and open to the public at the Science Centre before travelling to other facilities such as Changi Airport Terminal 3 and NLB's libraries. NLB has supported the exhibition by providing a curated collection of ebooks and photographs about the pandemic from its image crowdsourcing platform PictureSG.

13. Science Centre Light

Travelling Light is a travelling exhibition that aims to stimulate students' interest in STEM and encourage self-directed learning. The exhibition showcases the scientific properties of light through scientific inquiry, interactives, and demonstrations of everyday applications. NLB has supported this exhibition by providing a curated list of eResources, which includes books, videos, and DIY activities about light.

14. Node at Changi Cottage

The National Library Board (NLB) and Civil Service Club (CSC) have unveiled a Node at Changi Cottage to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew (LKY100). The Cottage is historically significant as it was where Mr Lee spent time reflecting and developing plans for Singapore's future after independence from Malaysia in 1965. The Node is a tribute to Mr Lee's life and contributions to Singapore, and visitors can learn more about him and his legacy. The Node features an artistic black-and-white impression of Mr and Mrs Lee at the Cottage during the declaration of Singapore's independence, and QR codes provide access to books on Mr Lee, including autobiographies and biographies.

Note: This Cottage is not open for public viewing. It is for rental only.

15. Browse-n-Borrow and Wallpaper Libraries at West Mall

Browse-n-Borrow and Wallpaper Libraries at West Mall

Amid the rejuvenation of the Bukit Batok Public Library, NLB has introduced three services to assist patrons:

  1. NLB will be introducing a new pilot initiative from 3 June 2024 onwards called “Browse-n-Borrow”. With “Browse-n-Borrow” patrons of all age can easily explore, flip through and borrow books from a diverse collection of up to 750 titles, which will be refreshed regularly. “Browse-n-Borrow” is located at level 2 in West Mall.
  2. Reservation lockers will also be available on-site at Level 2 for the convenient collection of reserved items.
  3. Patrons can also check out featured NLB’s eResources on specially curated thematic Wallpaper Libraries displayed on the hoarding panels.

3. READ30 Nodes

READ30 features eight captivating pop-up Nodes along a literary trail from the National Library Building to Orchard road. As part of NLB’s 30th anniversary celebrations, these uniquely themed pop-ups showcases curated books handpicked by 30 Singaporean personalities. Browse physical books and eBooks, and capture Instagram-worthy moments!

4. Transport Nodes

In collaboration with National Reading Movement, the transport nodes are deployed to encourage commuters to read and learn. The curated content on these transport nodes include popular eBooks, latest eMagazines, videos and NLB free access content. The transport nodes are prominently placed at the train station’s platform screen doors. Do Scan and Read on the Go! Enrich your journey while travelling on the train!

5. Happy Meal Readers Storytelling Sessions

Ground control to young astronauts, get ready for a cosmic journey with NLB and McDonald's this March school holidays! Discover space themed NLB eResources and storytelling sessions* on Neil Armstrong's space journey at participating McDonald's restaurants with NLB and McDonald’s storytellers! Don't forget to redeem limited edition stickers when you scan the QR codes on our standees and posters as well!

6. Garfield x Mr Kiasu Library

Garfield x Mr Kiasu Library

The Garfield X Mr Kiasu Library is a one-of-a-kind pop-up library at The Centrepoint. This unique crossover sees Singapore’s local comic icon, Mr Kiasu inviting Garfield to Singapore to try the country’s signature dish, Laksa. Visitors will have an immersive experience as they enter the space, designed as Mr Kiasu’s flat. The pop-up will showcase Garfield titles, the entire Mr Kiasu collection, alongside eTitles on topics such as cooking, wellness and lifestyle. A mix of digital and physical resources gives visitors the opportunity to explore and borrow the eTitles, as well as browse the physical books while making themselves at home in Mr Kiasu’s flat.

7. Manga Library@City Square Mall

Manga Library

Launched in February 2023, the Manga Library@City Square Mall was NLB’s first manga library, where patrons can borrow from a colourful and vast collection of 6,000 Japanese graphic books and comics, enjoy a wide variety of creative digital manga on e-Reads screens, and discover more about the Singapore comics scene at the exhibition space.

As a fully self-service “Grab-n-Go” library at a mall, patrons could also interact with the Mr Kiasu robot concierge, based on the lead character in the popular local comic series. Created specially by NLB in collaboration with partners Dex-Lab, a local social robotics company, and one of the co-creators of Mr Kiasu, Johnny Lau, the Mr Kiasu robot concierge, programmed with an AI-generated voice, recommended books and provide basic instructions on using the Grab-n-Go library.

8. Nodes at Parks

Nodes at Parks

Nodes at Parks was a series of interactive installations that roved to parks and gardens across Singapore over the a few months. Through these Nodes, people could easily access NLB’s e-resources on sustainability, learn more ways to lead a sustainable lifestyle, and contribute to the Singapore Green Plan 2030. Nodes at Parks was a collaborative project spearheaded by NLB together with community partners, green entrepreneurs and schools, and was an initiative is supported by the SG Eco Fund.

9. F&B Nodes

NLB's partnership with BreadTalk Group brought the NLB’s rich resources of content and knowledge to eateries around Singapore through our F&B Nodes. Visitors could access these resources by making a purchase of drinks at any of the selected Food Republic and Food Junction outlets or any item at the selected Toast Box or BreadTalk outlets. Qualifying purchases received a free mini-book keychain that led to NLB's resources. Visitors could discover books covering a wide range of topics, from DIY food ideas such as fermentation for beginners, sourdough-making, and growing your own microgreens, to resources tracing the rich, cultural history of food in Singapore.

10. Jewel Nodes

NLB partnered with Japanese minimalist lifestyle brand MUJI to roll out a series of haikus in malls across Singapore. NLB has worked with MUJI to create a Wall of Haikus at Jewel Changi Airport and Plaza Singapura that held 30 uniquely-designed bookmarks inspired by Japanese block printing. Each bookmark featured a haiku and a QR code that links to an NLB eBook. Members of the public could take a haiku bookmark and through it, find a book to read too.

11. Mall Nodes

Mall Nodes

Through Mall Nodes, the public could discover various NLB eResources through immersive wallpapers and lift decals in 12 malls, such as Bedok Mall, IMM, Junction 8, Parkway Parade and PLQ Mall. This was be followed by the launch of The Experience Lab – a journey into NLB’s rich collections through larger-than-life installations – which roved between 10 malls from October 2021 to December 2021. Visitors could reignite the joy of learning and discovery in simple and surprising ways. From an audio-visual carousel ride that transports one to Korea, to nature-themed sculptures, these installations were opportunities of learning and discovery at malls throughout Singapore. This was part of a collaboration between NLB and mall partners CapitaLand malls, Lendlease, SingPost Centre Mall, Frasers and JTC to bring learning and discovery into everyday spaces.

12. Stellar@TE2

Step into a world of imagination with our colourful mural wall node at Steller@TE2. This Node features eight QR codes that lead to recommended eReads for kids, with the e-titles refreshed monthly. Visitors can discover these eReads and stand a chance to win $20 worth of shopping eVouchers through a monthly lucky draw.

13. Book Nodes

LAB25 Book Nodes offer a unique opportunity to indulge in everyday literary experiences. These Book Nodes are located at various cafés in Singapore, providing visitors with a chance to browse through a curated selection of titles while enjoying a cup of coffee. Visitors can immerse themselves in a world of literature and take their favourite new reads home with them.

14. National Library Grab-n-Go

Grab-n-Go at National Library Building

The Grab-n-Go Library at the National Library is the first time NLB has piloted a self-checkout service via Ultra High Frequency gantries, making borrowing of books easier than ever. This self-checkout system enables patrons to pick up a book from the library and it will be automatically checked-out as they exit through the gantry. This pilot project is part of NLB’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology to enhance the experience for its patrons under its LAB25 (Library and Archives Blueprint 2025) plan. 

With the opening of the revamped Central Public Library, the Grab-n-Go service, one of the replacement services during the revamp, and Study Lounge at the National Library Building (Level 5) will be permanently closed from 9 February 2024Check out the full suite of NLB services at Central Public Library located at B1, and stay tuned for updates on the refreshed space on Level 5.

15. SMRT Nodes (Phase 1)

SMRT Nodes

With SMRT Nodes, daily commutes on Singapore’s public transport system become learning journeys. Jointly launched by the National Library Board (NLB) and SMRT Corporation (SMRT), SMRT Nodes are located at various MRT train station platforms and bus interchanges in Singapore. These Nodes, which are available from September 2023 to March 2024, will provide SMRT commuters quick and convenient access to a selection of e-magazine titles such as TIME, National Geographic, PC World, Reader’s Digest, and NLB’s publication BiblioAsia, as well as NLB’s YouTube videos, and e-books. With titles carefully curated to cater to commuters of all ages and backgrounds, most of the content will be refreshed monthly so that commuters have something new to look forward to.

16. SMRT Nodes (Phase 2)

First launched in September 2023, NLB’s collaboration with SMRT is part of its effort to bring the library experience beyond its premises, making learning and discovery accessible in everyday spaces. The SMRT Nodes were well-received in the initial phase from September 2023 to March 2024.

In the second phase of the Nodes partnership, commuters can look forward to new content, including bestsellers, popular e-books, and e-magazines! There will be a refresh of new titles in July 2024.

17. StoryGen (Horror Edition)

StoryGen Horror Edition

StoryGen (Horror Edition) is NLB’s first horror-themed Node, powered by Generative AI. Come and put your own twist on local horror stories and enter a multi-sensory experience to read your story.

Who can participate?

StoryGen (Horror Edition) is only open to those aged 15 and above. Participants may be asked to display proof of age [NRIC] to staff before they are allowed to enter the event. Below the age of 15 are not allowed to attend due to the horror-themed nature of the event.

In addition, participants will experience intense audio and lighting as well as low visibility. Therefore, participants should not enter if they are pregnant, have claustrophobia, are prone to seizures, heart or respiratory problems, or any other medical conditions that may be triggered and/or worsened by stressful conditions.

NLB reserves the right to refuse entry in situations where the staff finds the participant unsuitable, or if the participant displays objectionable conduct, including but not limited to the following: line jumping, use of foul language, inappropriate behaviour, mistreatment and abuse of performers and NLB staff.

NLB will not be responsible or liable for any damage (personal or property), injury, loss or theft. By entering our event, participants acknowledge and take full responsibility for themselves and their belongings.

 

18. Node at Esplanade

Node at Esplanade features three local personalities and their favourite reads at Esplanade over the span of a year. Look out for the wallpaper node at Esplanade, Level 4 and scan the QR codes on the wallpaper node to check out their book recommendations!

Currently featured: Our third and last personality, Munah Bagharib, a Singaporean host and actress acting on Singapore television as well as in theatre productions. Munah shares 5 of her favourite reads and tells us why. Check out which book opened her mind on how she views the world here

19. Chinese Classics: Reimagined

Step into the world of the Chinese literary classic “Journey to the West”. The National Library Board (NLB) presents ChatBook: Journey to the West.

This is NLB’s first iteration of ChatBook in Mandarin and for fictional content. It uses Generative AI to let you converse with main characters from this classic story, promoting interest in Chinese literature and language through interactive dialogue.
