1984-1988. In a cool and raining night, I cannot sleep in the middle of night and start to run through the three bags of books and stationeries which we bought at the BookFest @ Singapore 2013. I found this leaflet on "irememberBookstores @ Bras Basah Complex" inside one of the bags. Normally I will not take a closer look at leaflet that I received but somehow there is this power that attracts me to read up what is it about. (Memory collected at the 'irememberBookstores' campaign) 30 years, 1980-2013! I started to recall when I started to know about Popular. Wow, time flies..... "Share with us your past memories or stories relating to POP@Central". Someone like me who does not have a good command of English, usually will not have the courage to write in but I have so much to share about "City of Books". So I switched on my computer and started to put my feeling into words. "City of Books" used to be a favourite hangout for both my brother and I. Instead of hanging around shopping malls, we will make a point to visit Bras Basah Complex almost every week. I remember Popular used to be opposite of Bras Basah Complex, which was behind the bus stop which is near to the SMU now. After visiting Popular, we will cross over the road to visit the Union Bookstore and Knowledge Bookstore. As both my brother and I did not have tuition, so we used to buy assessment books from Knowledge Bookstore. Till now I can still remember the helpful Indian uncles that helped us to draw our assessment books and ten year series from the tall shelves. Every year we will go to Knowledge Bookstore to buy our textbooks. Union Bookstore used to be our favourite bookstore for Chinese Books. I always associate my A2 score for Chinese during my GCE "O" Level with "City of Books". Reason being because during my Secondary Four, I actually bought all the Chinese Assessment Books on the rack and made a point to practice till 11pm every night and eventually I scored A2 for my "O" Level Chinese. Until today, I still occasionally bring this up and shared with my daughter the importance of assessment books and the impact "City of Books" has in my life. Due to my influence, my daughter will buy hundred of dollars of assessment books every Bookfest during school holiday. Today, I took a cab from Suntec City to Bras Basah Complex and I told the taxi uncle "City of Books". To my astonishment, he did not know where is "City of Books". Is "City of Books" a name for the past? Or only people of my generation know where is "City of Books"? Till I read this leaflet, then I know that I was not wrong. To me, Bras Basah Complex is a "City of Wisdom and Knowledge" and I hope that people will still know it as "City of Books". Hope that this name will pass down from generation after generation. "City of Books" has the memories that both my brother and I shared. Though my brother is currently working in overseas but he will definitely visit Bras Basah Complex whenever he is back in Singapore. As for myself, Bras Basah Complex is always my favourite hangout whenever my daughter has her Art class. I am happy to be giving an opportunity to share the impact "City of Books" has on me and my brother and memories that both of us shared.
