The strings, representing "The Silence of the Druids who Know, See and Hear Nothing", set the background for the solo trumpet which intones "The Perennial Question of Existence". The four woodwinds - 2 flutes, oboe and clarinet - attempt an answer. This occurs six times in all, the same questioning trumpet phrase being answered by the increasingly rapid and agitated woodwinds. At the last answer, the woodwinds confer and finally give up. The trumpet then intones the question one last time, and is now echoed only by the "Undisturbed Solitude" of the strings which taper into silence.
