What is Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) capable of doing now (and in the near future) that’s getting people so worried about the future of our world? In this talk, we’ll showcase the latest capabilities of what A.I. can now do and we’ll discuss the ethical and societal issues that arise with these new capabilities, and more importantly, what we can do to better prepare ourselves for an A.I.-driven future. Jonathan Y. H. Sim is Assistant Director (Pedagogy) at the NUS AI Centre for Educational Technologies; Fellow at the NUS Teaching Academy, and Lecturer with the Department of Philosophy, at the National University of Singapore. For his passion in teaching, he has won many awards, and he is actively training educators to effectively engage learners using AI in the classroom. 14:00-14:30 How CheckMate helps you fight misinformation and scams Read about CheckMate in the news recently? We're a homegrown, volunteer-run service on WhatsApp that allows you to send in text messages, links, or images that that you find dubious. Learn how you can contribute to this volunteer-driven effort to battle misinformation and scams. This talk will also touch on the AI and crowdsourcing mechanisms that CheckMate uses behind the scenes to categorise and determine whether the messages you send are credible or not. Are the bytes of data we generate carrying good news or fake news? With so much information being exchanged at a phenomenal speed on the internet, can we tell what is real or fake? Perhaps we have we been spreading fake news without knowing it? Find out the difference between disinformation, misinformation and the consequences this might have on you, your friends and your family when untruths or half-truths are spread. Listen to the tips and join the quiz at the end of this talk to win instant prizes. Frances Yong is the founder of White Byte, an organisation with a mission to embed digital literacy and raise awareness of cyber integrity in the community. She is an active evangelist for digital inclusion among the marginalised communities and stresses the importance of cyber safety through personal vigilance and community awareness so everyone can support each other be part of a safer digital ecosystem. Frances is recognised as a Master Trainer in Digital Literacy by the ASEAN Foundation, as part of a wider global initiative supported by Google.org. S.U.R.E. Learning Community
The S.U.R.E. Learning Community aims to build and nurture a learning community that is passionate about safeguarding the community from scams and misinformation. Based on a partnership between the National Library Board’s S.U.R.E. (Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate) programme and CheckMate, a community-based initiative to combat misinformation and scams, members can learn to become more effective practitioners of information literacy through a regular series of community meetings and workshops. They will also get a chance to put their skills into practice via the CheckMate platform.
With the S.U.R.E. team’s range of info-literacy resources and outreach experience combined with CheckMate’s specialty in crowdsourced information verification, the SURE Learning Community offers enriching and meaningful opportunities for members to directly contribute towards the ever-present fight against misinformation and scams.
How do I sign up?
Please fill up the registration form and look out for a follow-up email from NLB.
Frequency of meetings and workshops: Monthly or once every two months. Registered members will be notified on the scheduled dates and format (physical or digital) via email.

Always verify the news source. 3c Dubious misinformation about “flat earth” being spread to others. Check for two or more sources from credible sites to verify the information. 3d Be mindful of being trapped in echo chambers. When you’re only hearing the same perspectives and opinions over and over again, you may be in something called an echo chamber. 4a Use the S.U.R.E. steps to check if an information is credible before sharing information to your friends or family. 4b Check for security padlock icon on websites to ensure safe and secure online transactions. 4c Reach out to trusted adults when you encounter cyber-bullying. 4d Create strong and unique passwords to keep your online accounts safe. -
