  • Online Learning Journeys (The News Gallery Virtual Tour and Workshop)

    The News Gallery Virtual Tour and Workshop

    Introduction:The News Gallery is an exhibition at the National Library featuring Singapore’s earliest newspaper collections and interactive stations. In this programme, students will be taken on a fun and interactive learning experience that combines a virtual tour of The News Gallery and a workshop to pick up important media and information literacy skills.

    Students will learn about the evolving issues related to news media and online information. They will also learn about the rising trend of fake news and the NLB's S.U.R.E. (Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate) steps to combat their spread. S.U.R.E. is part of Digital Defence, the sixth pillar in Total Defence, to guard against threats in the digital domain.

    Programme Details: This tour cum workshop is conducted digitally. Student cohort-sized audiences can be accommodated. As Kahoot! will be utilised to engage the students in quizzes and activities, the usage of smartphones or Personal Learning Devices (PLDs) are recommended. In the event that smart devices cannot be used, an activity worksheet will be sent to the teachers to print out for the students.

  • Historical Investigation Workshop for Students

    Programme Introduction: This workshop aims to provide Lower Secondary students with a broad overview of the range of historical sources that can be tapped upon in the online and onsite repositories of the National Library Board (NLB) and the National Archives of Singapore (NAS), for a range of Historical Investigation topics in the 2021 Lower Secondary History syllabus .

    We currently cover one of the following H.I. questions in our workshops:

    • HI Question for Strand 1 (Communities and Experiences): How did the migrants contribute to the development of education and/or healthcare services in colonial Singapore from 1819 to 1942?
    • HI Question for Strand 2 (Science and Technology in Society): How did technological advancements and innovations in tin canning and/or rubber processing help facilitate Singapore’s growth as a port-city from the 1860s to 1940s?

    Programme Type: Workshop

    Programme Details: This workshop is conducted digitally. Teachers are recommended to prepare a laptop or smartphone to allow students to participate in interactive activities conducted via the Kahoot! platform. Students will learn to apply the SURE framework in their Historical Investigation assignments through a research process:

    • Source - Learn about the various primary & secondary sources in NLB’s collection, in terms of contextual background and highlights
    • Understand what you read; question and review as you go through the sources to get its main purpose and ideas
    • Research - develop a strategy for effective searching. Locate and access relevant source materials
    • Evaluate uncovered sources in terms of perspectives which are included/excluded,strengths/limitations in the use of various sources

    Target Audience: Lower Secondary students

  • Academic Research Skills Workshop

    Programme Introduction: In this workshop, students will learn how to make their online research more effective and efficient through a combination of search strategies and digital resources from the National Library Board (NLB .

    Programme Type: Workshop

    Programme Details: This workshop is conducted digitally. Teachers are recommended to prepare a laptop or smartphone as they will participate in interactive activities conducted via the Kahoot! platform. The contents of the workshop includes:

    • The problem of information overload
    • Identifying credible and factual sources
    • Search engine strategies and tips
    • Recommended NLB resources

    Target Audience: Secondary & JC students

    Programme Runtime: All year round

    Duration of Session: 1 hour

  • Teachers’ Workshop – Combating Online Misinformation and Fake News

    Programme Introduction: This workshop aims to equip educators with the knowledge and skills of applying information literacy in combating fake news. By leveraging on the National Library Board’s S.U.R.E. (Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate) principles, skills such as recognising the types of online falsehoods, identifying tell-tale signs of fake articles and utilising the latest fact-checking platforms will be taught.

    Programme Type: Workshop

    Programme Details: This workshop can be conducted either physically or digitally. Teachers are recommended to prepare a laptop or smartphone as they will participate in interactive activities conducted via the Kahoot! platform. A blended learning package consisting our content and resources will be provided for the teachers. The contents of the workshop include:

    • Characteristics of fake news
    • Impact of fake news
    • Using the S.U.R.E. steps to combat fake news
    • Fact-checking resources and techniques

    Target Audience: Teachers and educators
