What is digital content creation?

Digital content creation involves producing original material for online platforms. Whether you're running a photography account, writing food reviews, or making podcasts with friends, you can share your interest and perspectives with people worldwide.

Watch this introduction to digital media and how it differs from traditional media:

What kinds of digital content are there?

There are many kinds! They include:

  • Videos: Short-form and long-form videos, vlogs, animations

  • Visual content: Photography, infographics, graphic design

  • Written content: Blogs, newsletters, creative writing

  • Audio content: Podcasts, music, sound effects, voice-overs

Creating digital content develops multiple skills!

From storytelling to engage audiences, visual design to create appealing content, technical skills with various software, to audience awareness to connect with the right people, creating digital content develops varied skills. These skills can be useful as both a hobby, or a future career path in media, design or technology.

You don't need expensive equipment to create content that connects with people. With free software and online tutorials, your phone and some experimentation are all you need to get started. Ready to give it a go? Try our hands-on activities below!

Activity 1: Create a Digital Collage

Have fun mixing and matching images to create your own digital collage, that you can even use as your personalised phone wallpaper!

Material needed: Smartphone, digital collage app, internet connection

Step 1: Choose Your Theme

Choose a topic based on your interest, dreams, or memories. A few possible prompts to explore:

  • A memorable day out with your friends

  • A family trip/ your dream travel destination

  • A vision board (a collage of pictures and affirmations to inspire you)

  • Your favourite book, movies, or music

  • Your hobbies

Prepare your own digital photographs from your chosen theme.

Step 2: Make Your Collage

  • Set up your digital collage app as needed (log in, etc.)

  • Mix photographs and text to your liking

  • Consider colour schemes and different compositions- don’t be afraid to experiment!

  • Consider what kind of story you’d like to tell through your collage

Step3: Download and Use Your Collage

Download your collage to save it in your phone’s photos app. Feel free to set your collage as your phone wallpaper, or share it with your friends and family if you’re comfortable.

Activity 2: Create a Three-shot Reel

Materials needed: Smartphone, video collage app, internet connection

Step 1: Choose Your Theme

Pick a subject that you’d like to film. A few possible film subjects include:

  • A favourite corner of your neighbourhood/ room

  • A meal that you like

  • A day out with friends

  • A part of your daily routine

  • Your hobbies

Step 2: Plan Your Shots

Think about the various framing and angles you would like to use to film your subject. It can help to sketch it out on paper, or storyboard, before filming too!

  • Think about interesting ways you can present or reveal your subject

  • Consider the story you are trying to tell: are the 3 shots steps in preparing a meal? Do some shots establish the context or scene, while others provide detail or how the experience feels from your first-person perspective?

  • Think about how you can make each of the 3 shots visually distinct, but cohesive as a whole

  • Pro tip! You don’t have to be locked into your planned storyboard. In the course of filming, you might discover a new angle or framing that works better!

Step 3: Film Your Videos

  • Find an area with good lighting (natural lighting outdoors or from a window works great!)

  • Keep your phone steady (lean it against a wall or surface if you have to)

  • Try different angles and framing so you have more options at the editing stage

Pro tip! Film each shot longer than needed so you have some buffer. You can always trim down the footage during editing.

Step 4: Edit Your Reel

  • Set up your video collage app as needed (log in, etc)

  • Import your three best shots

  • Arrange them in the order that tells your story best

  • Trim your footage down to the desired timing

  • Consider adding text overlays, if it enhances your visual storytelling

  • Consider adding music if it enhances the mood of the reel

Pro tip! If you add music, do note that some music tracks may be copyrighted. In that case, be sure to only use your reel for your personal, non-commercial use.

Step 5: Download Your Reel

Watch your reel through when it is finished to check the pacing and flow

Download your reel to save it in your phone’s photos app. Feel free to share it with your friends and family if you’re comfortable.

Conclusion

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different formats and styles whilst developing your skills in digital content creation. Express your unique perspective through your content and enjoy learning!
