On 22 May 1930, Capitol Theatre, commissioned by Persian business magnate Mirza Mohamed Ali Namazie, opened its doors with a screening of the musical film Rio Rita. The theatre, with its striking neo-classical architecture and modern amenities (including an air-cooling system), quickly established itself as Singapore’s premier entertainment destination. The 1,686-seat auditorium hosted both film screenings and live performances under its distinctive dome. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: National Archives of Singapore.
