Singapore’s First Light Rail Transit System is launched

On 6 November 1999, Singapore’s first light rail project, the Bukit Panjang Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, was officially launched. The automatic and driverless LRT system was designed to enhance connectivity in residential areas by providing a link between the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network and local neighbourhoods. Spanning a 7.8 km elevated track, the loop service connected 14 stations. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: “Bukit Panjang LRT right on track,” Straits Times, 5 June 1999, 48.; “Bukit Panjang LRT to begin operating on Nov 6,” Straits Times, 26 July 1999, 3.
