Singapore’s First Swimming Pool Opens

Singapore’s first public swimming pool, Mount Emily Swimming Pool, opened on 10 January 1931. Notably, it was the first public pool that used fresh water. Located along Upper Wilkie Road, where Mount Emily Park stands today, the facility was converted from a former municipal reservoir. The pool featured two sections: a deep main area for experienced swimmers and a shallow section designed for beginners and children. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: “A big splash,” Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser (1884-1942), 12 January 1931, 20.
