Abstract
University students Kharim and Khatijah are in love. When Kharim proposes to Khatijah, however, he learns that she is betrothed to an older mystical 'healer' named Lebai Din, an engagement arranged by her family as part of the Minangkabau culture. In order to win over Khatijah's family and her hand in marriage, Kharim puts aside his modern prejudices and travels into the hinterlands of Malaysia to learn the craft of the mystical arts from famed healer Pak Salleh.
