Abstract
Video features the scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore and their research on coral reefs of the Mentawai islands. The Mentawai islands in West Sumatra, Indonesia are above the giant faultine that caused the 2004 earthquake of magnitude 9.2 and the huge tsumani. Scientists from the Earth Observatory of Singapore, in partnership wiiith the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and the California Institute of Technology, have been studying earthquakes in West Sumatra over 15 years, and by studying the coral reefs that were uplifted during earthquakes, the researchers have been able to build an earthquake timeline. The timeline goes back several centuries and shows sequences of earthquakes and tsumanis that have struck the region abot every two hundred years.
