Abstract
This video presents three early ballets by of one of the most important choreographers of the late 20th century, Prague born Jir.ư̐i Kyli.ư̐an. The first two pieces are set to music by Igor Stravinsky. "Svadebka" is Kyli.ư̐an's version of "Les Noces," wherein a young bride and groom become betrothed through the workings of matchmakers, bid farewell to their parents, and are married in an ecstatic wedding ceremony. "Symphony of Psalms" is an ensemble piece, turning grim impersonality into a celebration of the spirituality of being, the glory of humanity and love. "Torso," set to music by Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, is a sexy, steamy look at two lost lovers--a sultry ambivalent woman, and an anguished man. It is unclear whether she is real or a figment of his imagination, or what role she plays in his distress.
