Abstract
Set in Singapore and Malaya in the early 1960's. Kassim Selamat, a struggling musician (saxophone player) falls in love with Sabariah, a girl from a wealthy background. Although already engaged to Dr. Ismadi, Sabariah chose Kassim, much to the anger of her mother. They married, settled down in Penang, and to a life of poverty that eventually forced a pregnant Sabariah to return to her mother in Singapore. What was to be just a brief period of separation for Kassim and Sabariah was not to be. Sabariah's mother in a telegram to Kassim lied to him that Sabariah had died. Kassim in grieving for her, eventually turned blind. Sabariah meanwhile, believing that Kassim had deserted her, agreed to marry Ismadi. In the end, the lies were uncovered, but not without tragedy.
